Spring 2024

Codie, Blanca and Eneida have a few things in common: Money is tight, food is expensive and their kids are always hungry.

In Clinton, Codie's family has suffered one setback after another, and they lean on WHEAT, our local food pantry, for help. Life was derailed when 6-year-old Ace was diagnosed as a baby with a devastating medical condition.

Ace had his first of many surgeries for a rare GI disorder at 3 weeks old. Specialists at Boston Children's Hospital said Ace would never be able to eat like a regular kid. To everyone's great surprise, his condition improved and he no longer needs to live off a feeding tube. That's where WHEAT comes in.

"It’s so beautiful when I’m able to share that with my children and give them that nourishment," Codie said. It's not lost on her that Ace couldn't eat before, and that the family couldn’t even afford food without WHEAT. "To know that I’m able to nourish him and give him that, sometimes we take those things for granted."

Thank you to our volunteers like Wanda for all you do!

As a single mom, Wanda counts on our Pearl Street Cupboard & Café for help putting food on the table. She's been through harder times than many of us can imagine. Wanda was in the eye of the storm when Hurricane Maria—perhaps the most destructive Atlantic storm on record— hit her native Puerto Rico in 2017.

She lost her home but found her strength. Together with her family and church, Wanda helped others on the Caribbean island recover from total devastation. She helped cook, package, and distribute food, and found "that's been my calling." Wanda moved to the U.S. to give herself and her daughter a better life—but it hasn't been an easy one.

Pearl Street Cupboard & Café

Since Tatiana's family is low income, she clips coupons and knows what everything costs at the grocery store. That box of fruit and yogurt snacks her kids like? It's now $5-$6, and she can't afford it. So when we set up a huge table of "salvage" items for our Pearl Street Cupboard & Café, Tatiana was grateful. to shop through a huge donation of 30,000 pounds of salvage we got from Hannaford Supermarkets
