Volunteers continue the fight to end Alzheimer's during COVID-19
The Alzheimer's Association is powered by volunteers who are passionate and inspired about making a difference in the fight against the disease. Advocates, support group facilitators, community educators and event committee members have found creative ways to push their volunteerism forward virtually during the COVID-19 crisis.

Local support groups being held virtually
Currently, all support groups across the state have moved online or by phone. Two support groups in Cedar Rapids that normally meet at Mercy Medical Center now offer an online and call-in option. The caregivers that attend find the information shared to be incredibly valuable, and it keeps them coming back month after month.

Certain gene may help shield people at risk for Alzheimer's
People with the APOE4 gene face an increased risk of Alzheimer's, but a new study shows that individuals who also carry a "protective" form of a gene called klotho were 30 percent less likely to develop Alzheimer's by age 80. Not all APOE4 carriers develop Alzheimer's, and additional research is necessary to determine the role of genetics on the disease. Download our Science Hub app for more on this study.

Walk to End Alzheimer's kicks off volunteer committees across state

On Saturday, April 4, over 90 volunteer committee members across the state joined us for a virtual kickoff meeting to get to know their fellow Walk to End Alzheimer's® planning committee members, network with other volunteers and exchange ideas and best practices. We are always looking for new, passionate volunteers to help us plan, fundraise and support the Walk to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support and research.
